Although no statistics are currently held by the UK Statistics Authority, here are a few statistics provided by other organisations:


Occurrence

It estimated there are around 20,000 people in the UK who have Gender Dysphoria i.e. around 1 in 30,00 people.
However, only 25% are offered treatment (National statistics from the Gender Identity Centers).

It is also estimated that around 1 in 15 GPs still refuse to treat Trans People or refer them for appropriate treatments. Around 1 in 5 GPs are not trans friendly. In a survey of GPs, it was found out of those willing to help, 74% were unable to provide appropriate treatment due to lack of up to date information.


Suicide Rates

The national suicide rate for Trans People is estimated at 3 in 100,000, 31% of this group. It is estimated that 1 in 7 of diagnosed Trans People attempt suicide at least once during their life. It is estimated that the main causes of "Trans Suicide" are harassment , denial of treatment, and absence of support. It is also estimated that 1 in 200 transsexuals commit suicide within 5 yrs of having Gender Reassignment surgery, as a result of depression brought on by harassment / bullying.


Employment Rates

It is estimated that some 35% of Trans People living full time in their assumed gender, were unemployed, as a result of Transphobia. It is estimated that 33% of Trans People change jobs as a direct result of discrimination or conditions imposed upon them.


Legal Recognition

As of Sept 2007, more than 2220 Trans People have applied for legal recognition under the Gender Recognition Act 2004, over 94% have been successfully approved.
